The Matrix Chart shows how the Second Order Patterns are constructed. Each Second Order Pattern is composed of a major component of the First Order Pattern above it and a minor component of the First Order Pattern to the left of it. For example, Swing is made up of a major component of Rhythm and a minor component of Polarity. Intuitively this makes sense in that anything that is swinging has a rhythmic movement that is iterating from one extreme or pole to the other.
